Indian student wins Gates scholarship

An Indian human rights student has won the prestigious Gates scholarship and will take up her place at the Cambridge University in the autumn.
Aditi Malik from New Delhi is among 80 graduate students from 26 countries who have been selected for the Gates Cambridge Scholarships from more than 7,000 applicants. The scholarship programme celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.
The university said the programme, set up in 2000 and funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, enabled postgraduates with a strong interest in social leadership and responsibility to study at Cambridge.
“This year's scholars combine a strong academic record with highly developed social leadership skills,” it said.
Ultimate aim
Ms. Malik said: “My ultimate aim is to receive a Ph.D and become a university professor in India, where I believe the academic community on human rights discourse needs to be strengthened.”
She did her undergraduate degree in Government and Economics at Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania, U.S., and was given the Henry S. Williamson Award, the college's most prestigious award for academic and extra-curricular achievement given to a member of the graduating class. As an undergraduate, she conducted research on the death penalty in India and worked with asylum seekers in America.
At Cambridge, she will study for an M.Phil in International Relations focusing on the theoretical and practical tensions between state sovereignty and human rights.
Gordon Johnson, Provost (CEO) of the Gates Cambridge Trust, said: “We are delighted to have selected 80 new Gates Scholars for entry in October 2010. It's very thrilling that within 10 years we have awarded nearly 1,000 scholarships to students from 92 countries to follow a graduate course in Cambridge.”

Introduction to Online Education

Guide to Online Education > Online Education Basics > Types of Online Education
  1. Higher education
  2. Online continuing education
  3. Online training
  4. Military online education
  5. Non-credit online learning

There is more than one way to prepare for the future. In some countries, the educational fate of a student is essentially decided before puberty. Students are tracked and tested early in their primary years. By the middle school and high school years, college-bound students are siphoned off for entry into high schools with an academic focus. The others are given little choice but to enter an educational system that teaches basic skills for independent living, and terminates with home economics or vocational instruction. For them, an associate's is a two-year terminable degree. The credits cannot later be applied toward a bachelor's degree even if the student develops the maturity, motivation, and intellectual curiosity necessary for the rigors of academic life.
Fortunately, in America, students get a second chance…and usually a third, fourth, and fifth, too! Students take many paths to college—there is no right one. One size does not fit all. Some students are home-schooled, some are tutored, some matriculate through the public education system, some enroll in private schools, some take the requisite four years to complete high school, some opt to earn their diploma early, some drop out entirely, some go to night school, and some drop back in and take the high school equivalency test in lieu of earning a diploma. It is simply never too late.

The same holds true for higher education. Some students adhere to a degree plan generated with input from their academic advisors, and choose to make steady, regular progress toward their degrees. Others may choose to reduce their course load, take a semester off here and there, or change their areas of study. Some may plan to earn an associate's degree and later apply those credits to a bachelor's degree. Indeed, the same holds true for certificates, which can, at some schools, be applied to a master's degree.
Online learning makes education accessible to virtually everyone, at any stage, on the path to achievement. Students are not bound by physical disabilities, learning disabilities, poor life choices, geographic limitations, or socioeconomic status. Online learning makes the playing field about as level as it can get. A student who is determined enough can and will succeed.

Opportunities abound. If you have landed on this page, that means you are already considering an online education experience. Congratulations. You've made a smart move. Enroll and you will be in good company. According to a 2005 survey, "Growing By Degrees: Online Education in the United States, 2005", backed by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, online enrollments increased from 1.98 million in 2003 to 2.35 million in 2004. Over 360,000 new students are expected to enroll in online courses each year. They are unlocking their potential and you can, too!

More and more schools are offering courses online. Some schools offer the opportunity for students to obtain a certificate or a degree wholly online. Faculty and institutions are recognizing that not all students fit into the 18-22 year old demographic. The Socratic method, with one teacher standing in front of a blackboard facing dozens of students, is now just one way classes are taught. Not the only way. There are mature students with life experience who have different needs and objectives. Colleges and universities are tailoring the education experience they provide to these non-traditional students.

There are as many reasons to return to school as there are for leaving. Some people voluntarily interrupt their education. They decide that upon high school graduation they are not ready for college. Others defer education out of necessity in order to join the military, raise a family, or care for a family member. Then there are those who want to take time to find out their interests, work their way up from an entry-level job, or just get life experience. Later they find that what interests them requires a degree; or that they can't be promoted to more responsibility without a degree, or that their lifestyle demands a career change and more money. All at once they have to be competitive in the job market--and in many industries that means having a degree.

Online CAT results announced

The results of the much-anticipated Common Admission Test, the qualifying examination for admission to the elite Indian Institutes of Management, are out. However, like every year, students are already experiencing difficulties in accessing their score cards due to "server issues".

The results, which were declared early on Sunday morning, can be accessed on http://catiim.in, the official website of all the IIMs. The score card contains candidates scores, both absolute (out of 450) and percentile. The CAT is the first of two stage admission process to the IIMs' flagship two-year post-graduate programmes (PGP) in management. The second stage comprises Group Discussions/Essay Writing and Personal Interviews.
To retrieve their scorecards, candidates may use their CAT 2009 Register Numbers and email IDs, as it appears on their hall tickets. For those who are unable to do so, due to lack of sufficient details, the Prometric helpline (1 800 103 9293) will available, according to an announcement on the website.
The results, first slated to be released in the first week of January and then in mid-February, are well behind schedule. Roughly 2.4 lakh candidates took the exam this year. The seven IIMs located at Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Kozhikode, Bangalore, Kolkata, Indore and Shillong will put up separate lists of shortlisted candidates, who will qualify for the second stage that comprises group discussion/ essay writing and personal interview. By Sunday afternoon only IIM Shillong and Ahmedabad had put up their lists. Over 120 other B-schools across the country also use these scores as a yardstick for admissions.
This year's CAT, the first computer-based CAT, was held over a 10-day window in November-December 2009, and then again in January for those whose tests were rescheduled due to technical glitches. The scorecard thus far does not explain any anomalies or queries students may have regarding how a comparative percentile can be determined for 12 different set of questions.Curiously, the score card has marked them out of 450 for a test that comprised 60 questions, spread over three sections that carry equal weightage.

The Student Academy Awards

The Student Academy Awards is a national competition conducted by the Academy and the Academy Foundation. Each year over 500 college and university film students from all over the United States compete for awards and cash grants, with films being judged in four categories: Animation, Documentary, Narrative and Alternative. An outstanding student filmmaker from outside the U.S. is honored each year as well. The presentation ceremony is a popular event that is annually attended by a capacity audience in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Through the Student Academy Awards, the Academy recognizes and encourages this country's most promising new filmmakers. Past winners include Spike Lee, Gary Nadeau, Bob Saget, Trey Parker and Oscar winners John Lasseter and Robert Zemeckis.

To extend the impact and honor beyond the competition, a compilation presentation of the gold medal award-winning films is circulated each year free of charge to educational and non-profit organizations nationwide, utilizing a grant from Eastman Kodak.

For further information contact: Richard Miller (rmiller@oscars.org) at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, 8949 Wilshire Boulevard, Beverly Hills,California 90211-1972. Tel: (310)247-3000 extension 131.

Applications for the 35th Annual Student Academy Awards are now available. Please visit the Application Information page to apply online.

The Asian Scholarship Foundation

The Asian Scholarship Foundation

The Asian Scholarship Foundation is located in Bangkok, Thailand. Its office address is at the 4th Floor, Vanissa Building, Chidlom, Ploenchit Road, Pathumwan, Bangkok 10330. It has affiliate offices in Beijing and New Delhi, and partner offices in Hanoi, Jakarta and Manila.

The Foundation was placed under the Royal Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand on April 27, 2007.

FUNDING AND ADMINISTRATION

ASF is funded by a grant from the Ford Foundation. Its office in Bangkok administers the ASIA Fellows Awards in the region with assistance from its affiliate and partner offices in Beijing, New Delhi, Manila, Hanoi, and Jakarta.

The ASF Board Management Committee (BMC) is composed of twelve educational and public leaders from the Northeast, South and Southeast Asia. The BMC selects the ASF fellows, oversees the program and makes policy decisions on behalf of the Board of Directors.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The principal goal of the ASIA Fellows Awards is to increase the overall awareness of intellectual resources in the countries of Northeast , South and Southeast Asia and to contribute to the growth of long-range capabilities for cross-regional knowledge sharing. The ASIA Fellows Awards seek to develop regional expertise, to establish a multilateral network of Asian specialists from many disciplines, professional fields and countries, to stimulate interdisciplinary research and inter-societal comparison and to contribute to new developments within existing area studies communities.

The awards offer opportunities for outstanding young and mid-career level Asian scholars and professionals to gain knowledge of the countries in the region and a better understanding of the contexts that shape global and regional issues through research. They enable the awardees to conduct research in a participating Asian country for six to nine months.

FELLOWSHIP ACTIVITIES

ASIA Fellows awardees are placed at top-ranking research universities and non-academic institutions such as museums, archives or think tanks. Fellows are encouraged to identify preferred placements in their host countries. They are expected to engage in an organized field research in their selected host country.

Research projects must focus on only one country. Fellows are strongly encouraged to undertake some language training in their host country as part of facilitating their research project. They are also provided the opportunities to present guest lectures or to conduct seminars and workshops at the invitation of their host institutions.

Fellows may also apply for short-term travel awards to present their research results at overseas conferences and meetings.

All fellows are required to attend the Orientation Program and the ASIA Fellows’ Annual Conference in July each year where they present their research results to fellow awardees and to scholars from the country in which the conference is held. They are also required to start their work by the end of December each year. At the end of the fellowship, fellows must submit to the ASF office in Bangkok evidence of the results of their research project in the form of publications, photos or artistic works, audio/ video productions, etc.
