What makes a supernova?

New X-ray research questions the origins of a key type of supernova, and may bend one of astronomy's go-to rulers.

 One of astronomy's most heavily used tools for measuring distances may be less reliable than researchers have assumed, according to a pair of astrophysicists.

Their conclusion, which will be published in Thursday’s issue of the journal Nature, doesn't appear to cast doubt on decades of discoveries about the structure and evolution of the universe that relied on the tool – a form of exploding star called a Type 1A supernova.
These events "are the most important explosions in cosmology," says Marat Gilfanov, one of the two researchers involved in the Nature study.

In principle the new result "muddies the waters" for such stunning discoveries as the existence of dark energy, says astrophysicist Mario Livio, with the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore.
At the least, the result – if it holds up – represents "an embarrassment for all astrophysicists," he says. "For decades we've been studying these types of explosions, and we still don't know" which of two broad mechanisms are involved in triggering them. That implies that there may be differences in the amount of light they produce, even though they've been lumped into the same class of supernovae, he said during a press briefing Wednesday.

Supernovae briefly outshine the galaxies that contain them. Using observations of nearby supernovae and the types of stars that exploded, astronomers concluded that Type 1A supernovae tended to reach the same intrinsic peak brightness. And they had a telltale signature – their light faded over time in a characteristic pattern different from other types of supernovae.

Because light dims at a predictable rate with distance, researchers use the light from Type 1A supernovae as a kind of standard candle that allows them to calculate the distances to galaxies in which the explosions occur.
But over time, some researchers suggested that the process for generating a Type 1A supernova could vary.
Type 1As are thought to occur in a binary star system in which one member is a white dwarf – an end-of-life phase for a star like the sun – and the other a star still in its prime. Gravity from the white dwarf, which packs our sun's mass into an Earth-sized volume, draws matter from its companion. When the white dwarf's mass exceeds 1.4 times the sun's mass, the dwarf explodes as a supernova.

Yet researchers also have suggested that a merger of two white dwarfs could trigger a Type 1A supernova. One way to tell the difference: Look at their X-ray emissions; the dwarf-on-dwarf merger should display weaker X-ray emissions than an explosion resulting from accretion, when a white dwarf pirates material from a normal companion.

Dr. Gilfanov and Akos Bogdan, with the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Garching, Germany, looked at the X-ray, visible, and infrared emissions from six elliptical galaxies relatively close to the Milky Way. The X-ray data came from NASA's Chandra X-Ray Observatory.
Based on estimates of the number of stellar explosions one would typically expect to find in a galaxy, the X-ray emissions were 30 to 50 times weaker in the galaxies they studied than one would expect if the Type 1A supernovae were triggered by accretion, rather than by mergers.

In complementing the work, Dr. Livios cautions that "the conclusion is weakened by the fact we're talking about a nondetection," likening it to the Sherlock Holmes tale in which the sleuth cracked the case based in large part on a dog that didn't bark.
More work needs to be done, the researchers acknowledge, to see if the same relative dearth of X-rays is present in spiral galaxies, which have far higher rates of star formation – and explosive star deaths – as ellipticals.
However, Livios adds, these results and recent observational evidence that Type 1A supernovae display slightly different light output, depending on the type of galaxy they inhabit, "emphasize the need to really finally try to understand what the progenitor [star] systems really are."

Forget 3G. AT&T says the Apple iPad is really a Wi-Fi device

The phone company's CEO says the kerfuffle over 3G network strain is besides the point – most Apple iPad owners will be using a Wi-Fi connection anyway. 

 
Since Apple took the wraps off the iPad back in January, many analysts have wondered how the strained AT&T network would handle another 3G device. The naysayers offer something like this: AT&T already struggles in some markets to handle data requests from iPhone users. The arrival of the 3G-hogging iPad might fritz out the network all together.  

Apple, it should be said, has stood by its man. "AT&T is a great partner," Tim Cook, chief operating officer at Apple said earlier this year. But now AT&T seems to be hinting that the 3G debate is besides the point. In a conference call with investors, AT&T chief exec Randall Stephenson forecasted that users of the Apple iPad would probably rely on Wi-Fi connections, rather than a subscription service.
"My expectation is that there's not going to be a lot of people out there looking for another subscription," Stephenson said, according to Reuters.

Apple will offer two versions of the iPad. The first is equipped only with a Wi-Fi connection, just like a regular laptop. The second – and more expensive – iPad comes with Wi-Fi and 3G capability, just like an iPhone. Consumers who opt for the more expensive 3G-equipped device can purchase subscription plans through AT&T. The company will charge $14.99 a month for up to 250MB of data. An unlimited mobile data plan will cost $29.99 a month. Neither plan will require a contract.

We tend to agree that most consumers will be fine with a Wi-Fi connection. The iPad, obviously, is not the iPhone – it's portable, but not pocket size, and we can't exactly picture ourselves pottering down the street, Googling the nearest restaurant on the iPad's big old screen. 3G would be useful if we were sipping a latte, for instance, or waiting for a flight, but Wi-Fi access is expanding fast, and many coffee shops and airports are already wired – or should we say wireless.
Moreover, the thought of adding another chunk of change to our already hefty phone bill doesn't exactly appeal.

Verizon outage strikes nationwide

Users of phones such as the Droid and the BlackBerry are reporting a widespread Verizon outage. The company says it is working on the problem. 

 Hundreds of consumers are flocking to online discussion boards to report a Verizon outage across the carrier's network, a problem that Verizon says it is working to fix. Outage time appears to vary, but some Verizon users say they have been unable to access the Web or email for hours. Crucially, the issues center on faulty Internet and data connections – Verizon phone service appears to be unaffected.

"I haven't had Internet or email access all morning (4:30 am EST when I woke up). How sad that this could happen," a user in Cincinnati wrote today on a Droid forum. "How pathetic that Verizon doesn't post something up on their site." Judging by the message boards, the Midwest and South seem to have been hit harder by the outages than the coasts. "Mine started going haywire last night," an Indiana Droid fan posted this morning.

Tim Stevens at Engadget confirms that Verizon is aware of the outages, although the company has not said how soon the issues could be resolved. "We'd advise not calling and bothering the support folks about this – based on how long we were on hold we're guessing they have their hands full at the moment," Stevens counseled. Many forum participants seem to agree, although that hasn't stopped others from flooding switchboards with complaints.

The outage comes at a time when Verizon is jostling with AT&T for shares of the US market. AT&T, of course, has outage problems of its own: Heavy traffic from iPhone users has bogged down the AT&T data network. Meanwhile, there are widespread concerns that the forthcoming Apple iPad, which will utilize a 3G connection, could bring AT&T data speeds to a screeching halt.

Another take on this story: Keeping modern, networked systems up and running is tough. As features grow, so does complexity. Olympic Games : London dreams of a Cloud castle

The Cloud, an ambitious structure planned for 2012 Olympics, has airy spheres, spiral walkways, data projection.

 A group of architects, artists, and other big thinkers are certain that they don’t have their heads in a cloud as they plan what could be the most startling structure to emerge from the London Olympic Games of 2012.

Called simply “the Cloud,” the monument would consist of two slender towers rising hundreds of feet into the air. Atop the twin spires float digital displays and viewing platforms for the public, who would climb up by foot or bicycle using spiral ramps wrapped around one of the towers. The summit would also feature giant inflated plastic spheres, some of which visitors could enter. Real-time information about the Games and the surroundings would be displayed by Google.

In an emerging century with more and more online experience, the Cloud aims to form a connection from the virtual world to the real world, “from the world of bits to the physical world, the world of atoms,” says Carlo Ratti, head of the SENSEable Cities Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass., and a member of the international team working on the project. Other players include Arup, the architectural firm that designed the Sydney Opera House. Umberto Eco, the Italian philosopher and popular novelist, is serving as an adviser.
The Cloud team wants both the finished product, and the way it is conceived and financed, to be revolutionary. While traditional monuments emphasize their grandeur and permanence by expressing a sense of mass and weight, the Cloud “upturns the monumental tradition” with its airy, almost ephemeral design, says Sarah Goldhagen, architecture critic for The New Republic.

“I think the idea is incredibly cool,” she says. Ms. Goldhagen, who also edits an academic journal on modern architecture, is one of three experts the Monitor asked to look at the plans for the Cloud, which are posted online at raisingthecloud

The Cloud is designed to be “carbon neutral,” creating the energy it needs to operate from the use of regenerative brakes (similar to those used on hybrid cars). While visitors put in the initial effort by climbing the monument, the Cloud scheme then produces electricity as an elevator lowers visitors back to the ground. Solar panels will also generate electricity.

An Internet-based effort:
The design team, which has met only once, last summer, includes members in Britain, Germany, Italy, Australia, and the United States. It mostly works over the Internet with little formal structure, though Professor Ratti at MIT is acting as a coordinator.
The project is among a handful being considered by London Mayor Boris Johnson to become an official part of the London Games.

But even if the Cloud isn’t chosen by the mayor, its designers plan to find an appropriate venue in London in which to build it in time for the Games. “We can build our CLOUD with £5 million [$8 million] or £50 million,” says Ratti on the group’s website. “The flexibility of the structural system will allow us to tune the size of the CLOUD to the level of funding that is reached.”
The group will raise funds via the Internet using social-media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
“[W]e would like the Cloud to become a symbol of global ownership built through a bottom-up fundraising effort,” Ratti says on the website, akin to the effort used by President Obama’s campaign to collect a large number of small donations online.

The idea of a cloud also evokes “cloud computing,” the concept of storing, manipulating, and sharing data online rather than in an individual computer. Ratti also uses the high-tech buzzword “crowdsourcing” to indicate how he expects a wide number of people to contribute thinking and funding to the effort.
Google says it will supply content for the Cloud’s digital displays, using Google Trends, Google Maps, and its social-networking feature Google Latitude. “For instance, we could provide a custom feed of (aggregated and anonymous) searches made by Londoners during the Olympics to give a real time ‘barometer’ of the city’s interests and mood,” reads a statement from the search-engine giant. In addition, Google promises free advertising for the project through its website and YouTube, including fundraising efforts.

The computer helper: Gmail power tips

Google’s Gmail is arguably the most powerful and configurable of the free e-mail services out there. But most people tap just a small percentage of its features. That’s in part because a lot of what you can do with Gmail is hidden beneath the surface. The following questions involve bringing some of that functionality to light.
 
I have multiple Gmail accounts. Logging on to each one is time-consuming, though. Is there a quicker way to manage them?
Perhaps the quickest way is to take advantage of Gmail’s POP3 functionality to set up your Gmail accounts in a traditional e-mail client, such as Outlook, Thunderbird, or Eudora. That way, you can download all of your mail from multiple accounts at the same time and respond to them from one location.
For instructions on setting up individual mail programs to receive Gmail, open your Gmail account, and click the Settings link. From the Settings screen, click Forwarding and POP/IMAP. In the POP Download section, make sure you select one of the “enable” option buttons. And from the same section, click the “Configuration instructions” link to learn how to set up Gmail with the e-mail program you use.
Instructions for Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Windows Mail, and more are provided. There’s also instructions for iPhone users.
If you use the Firefox web browser, another option is to download and install Gmail Manager (http://bit.ly/1i3TkM), a well-regarded add-on that gives you access to multiple Gmail accounts from your browser’s status bar. With the add-on installed, you’ll be able to see what’s new in each of your Gmail accounts, and you’ll be able to respond to compose mail or respond to messages quickly. 

I heard that I can use the storage space provided by Gmail to store regular files. I don’t see anything about this in Gmail. Is this possible?
Yes. The free utility Gmail Drive (http://bit.ly/33AjJ) will create a virtual drive based upon your Gmail account. Once installed, the drive will show up in Windows Explorer just like any other drive.
In Windows 7, the drive is categorised as “Other.” When you first try to access or double-click the drive, Gmail Drive prompts you for your Gmail logon credentials. Once you’re logged on, you can drag and drop files to your Gmail drive just as you can to any other. 

How can I back up my Gmail?
The easiest way is to have Gmail forward a copy of all incoming messages to another e-mail account. You can use another free e-mail provider, such as Yahoo! or Microsoft if you wish.
To set up forwarding, open your Gmail account, and click Settings.
From the Settings screen, click Forwarding and POP/IMAP, and from the Forwarding section, select “Forward a copy of incoming mail.” Supply an e-mail address to which mail should be forwarded.
In addition to backing up your e-mail, this feature will also give you a way to access your e-mail when Gmail is down or inaccessible for any reason. In an age when, for many people, e-mail is crucial to getting work done, backing up in this manner is a good idea. 

The main reason I don’t use Gmail is that I hate web interfaces. They’re completely mouse oriented. Is there some kind of add-on or macro program that will allow me to assign keyboard shortcuts to Gmail?
You don’t need an add-on to make Gmail keyboard friendly. All you need to do is learn and take advantage of the many built-in keyboard shortcuts available already.
For instance, log on to your Gmail account, and press the letter “c” to compose a new message. While reading a message, press “r” to reply or “a” to reply to all recipients. Press “f” to forward. Press “n” to see the next message as you’re reading the current one, and press “p” to see the previous one. To see a complete list of keyboard shortcuts, just click the Help link and type “keyboard” in the resulting search box.
Of course, you can also set up your favourite e-mail program, such as Outlook, to retrieve and send Gmail, bypassing the web interface altogether. Then you’ll have the familiar keyboard shortcuts at your disposal. 

There’s a new Buzz link in my Gmail. I watched the video tutorial about Buzz and clearly have no use for it. How do I get rid of it?
Buzz, the new Twitter-like Google service that allows you and others within a defined social group to post what’s going on or what’s interesting, is getting mixed reviews — and not just from those who see no use for it, like you. Some of those who actually use it complain that the service is resource-hungry and intrusive. If you use it, its integration into Gmail means that you’re notified of a “buzz” via your Gmail inbox.
It’s easy to get rid of Buzz, though. From the Settings screen, locate and click the Buzz link among the available settings. From the “Buzz choices” section, click “Do not show Google Buzz in Gmail” and/or Disable Google Buzz.
Selecting “Do not show Google Buzz in Gmail” will simply remove the Buzz link from your Gmail. Disabling Buzz will remove any Buzz profile you’ve created as well as any posts (or buzzes) that you’ve made.

Twitter users hit 75 million

The micro-blogging site Twitter is rapidly growing in the popularity chart, if the humongous rise in the number of registered accounts is any indication - a staggering 1,500-plus per cent growth last year. 

“In the course of a year, the numbers of registered Twitter accounts have grown more than 1,500 per cent,” Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said in a statement here. He further said the number of his staff also rose significantly to 140 during the reporting year.
A study by online analysis software company RJMetrics said the number of Twitter users reached an estimated 75 million by the end of 2009.
Twitter has gone up on the popularity charts with a number of celebrities, including pop star Britney Spears. The U.S. daily The New York Times started using this service, while tens of thousands use it for dissemination of information.
The most notable twitter face in the country is the Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor, whose 'flying cattle-class' comment following the government’s austerity drive last year created a controversy. Many actors are also regulars on this platform now.
Twitter offers micro-blogging which allows users to send short text messages, among others, on various multimedia platforms.

10 Google Buzzzzzzzzz Tips

Now that people have been playing with Google Buzz in Gmail for a week and we've rolled out the improvements we announced here over the weekend, we wanted to let you know about some tips and tricks to help you get the most out of Buzz. Here are five tips to get you started:

01. Format your posts. When posting in Buzz, you can format text just as you can in Gmail chat: *bold*, _italics_, or -strikethrough- all work.



02. View a summary of your own Buzz activity at www.google.com/dashboard. The Google Dashboard provides a private, consolidated summary of the data associated with your Google account, as well as direct links to control your personal settings. As of today, Buzz has its own section on the Dashboard, so you can see how many people you're following, how many people are following you, and information about your recent posts, comments, and likes. You can also access your Buzz settings right there on the page.


03. Use an @reply to send a post directly to someone's inbox. If you want to make sure one of your friends sees a certain Buzz post, you can direct it to their inbox with an @reply. Type the "@" symbol followed by the first few letters of their name, and select their email address from the list. Only you'll see their Gmail address — other people will just see their name.



04. Try keyboard shortcuts to fly through buzz. Turn on keyboard shortcuts from Settings, and use "j" or "n" to scroll down the buzz tab, "k" or "p" to go back up, "r" to comment (same shortcut as reply in Gmail), and "shift + l" to like.

05. Mute posts so they don't get sent to your inbox. Comments on your posts and comments after your comments send buzz directly to your inbox. If you don't want a lively conversation to keep appearing in your inbox as people reply to it, you can mute it. Click the arrow in the corner of a buzz post and select "Mute this post."


If you have keyboard shortcuts turned on, you can also mute buzz that appears in your inbox by hitting the "m" key while you're reading it.

06. Post by email. You can post buzz by emailing buzz@gmail.com — super handy for posting photos you take on your phone. Photos that you attach to your email will appear along with the subject line of your message. You can choose who can see posts you email into Buzz from the connected sites menu (click "Buzz," then "Connected Sites").


07. Prevent your boring chat status messages from being posted to Buzz. By default, your chat status messages are posted to Buzz and shared with your chat contacts. Don't want a boring message like "be right back" to turn into a Buzz post? Just put parentheses around it. If you don't want any of your chat status messages to get posted, you can always disconnect chat from the connected sites menu.


08. Look for the yellow line to see what's new. Can't figure out what's new on the Buzz tab? Posts and comments new since your last visit have a light yellow line along the left hand edge (if you're using a different theme the color may vary).


09. Link to a post. Each Buzz post has a permalink, so you can link to it. Click the down-arrow in the upper right-hand corner of a post, and select "Link to this post." Of course, you'lll only be able to see the posts you have access to.


10. Follow the Buzz team in Google Buzz. Visit buzz.google.com/googlebuzz and click "Follow Google Buzz" to get updates about what we're working on and send us your feedback.

Fast new Windows

One of the lesser-known features of Gmail is its ability to help with multitasking. Frequently, I find that I need to find an old message while I'm composing an email. When this happens, I click on the "new window" icon to pop my compose area into its own window:


There's only one problem — it's been slow! Today, we're rolling out a change that will fix this (reload your account to make sure you get this change). Now, popping out a window is much, much faster. No more "Loading..." progress bar.

There are a number of places you can pop up new windows in Gmail.
  • In chat, there's the little upward arrow in the title bar:

  • When writing a message, hold the "Shift" key while you click on the Compose Mail, Reply, Reply All or Forward links and you'll get a new window for your new message. (Holding the "Shift" key while typing the keyboard shortcut — in other words typing "C" "R" or "F" — has the same effect.)
  • When you're reading your mail, hold the "Shift" key while you click on a message to open the conversation in a new window. (Same holds true for the "Shift" key and the "o" or "Enter" shortcuts.)
  • If you're reading an email and want to save it for later, you can click the "New window" link in the upper-right hand corner of the conversation view:


Keep in mind that the popped out window does not outlive the closing of the original Gmail window, although we're working on a way to make that better. Google Labs

Google launched Gmail Labs over a year and a half ago as a playground where engineers can come up with new features and let your input help decide which are good ideas and which don't quite work out. Any engineer at Google can come up with a feature, code it, and launch it quickly to tens of millions of users.

Labs started out with 13 features and quickly grew to 60, with even more on the way. We've received countless comments and kept an eye on our stats: some of these experimental features were adopted by millions and others trickled along with little usage. A couple have already graduated from Labs and we've already retired one: Tasks was the first to become a regular part of Gmail, Right-side Labels was retired when we updated the way labels work, and Offline Gmail graduated a couple months back. Today, true to the original intent of Gmail Labs, we're graduating six more features and retiring five.

Search Autocomplete and Go To Label
Start typing in the Gmail search box (English only for now), and Gmail suggests terms that might help you find what you're looking for — from contact names to labels and advanced search operators.


We've integrated Go To Label into this search box as well. If you have keyboard shortcuts turned on, type "g" then "l" and instead of getting the old "Go to label" pop-up, you'll be in the search box with the "label:" operator filled in for you. Start typing the label you want to go to, and autocomplete will take it from there. All you have to do is hit enter. If you want to send your cursor to the blank search field, the keyboard shortcut "/" will do it.

Chrome: The new colour of OS


There is a new kid in the Operating System (OS) block. The source code of Chromium OS, the open source project behind Google Chrome OS, was released a couple of weeks ago and, according to the official Google blog, netbooks preloaded with the finished OS will be available by late 2010.

It will support both x86 (Intel) as well as ARM chips and, from the looks of the early release, the interface will sport a Spartan aesthetic – similar to Google’s browser.
Google is consulting a variety of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to design machines with “specific reference hardware.” This will skip a lot of the hardware checking steps that standard operating systems run through. In some of the test runs, the OS booted up in under seven seconds. The platform is based on a Linux kernel which will self-check and self-update at every boot.
But what does all the guesswork about the final technical specifications and the anticipated use of emerging technologies such as HTML 5 really mean to you?

ADVANTAGES

The first obvious thing is laptops loaded with an open source OS costs less because the device manufacturer does not have to pay a licensing fee. The second being those who want to stay on the ‘Cloud’ might now have a real option and the third is the broader issue of competition driving innovation.
The OS is the interface which lets you ‘talk’ with your computer. It helps the underlying hardware in the machine to understand what you are saying. Application developers build their software on top of the OS, so that they need not have to handle hardware calls.
Chrome OS is more of an interface to the web than a real operating system with a desktop. Google realises that the Web is no longer filled with static web pages; it is a place where people interact with complex software applications.
The Internet has evolved to a point where you no longer need an operating system to perform the most basic computing tasks. All that you need is an operating environment. That is the approach Google has taken. All the applications run from within a browser and your data is stored in the ‘Cloud’ – which essentially means as Google puts it “completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don’t have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates.”
You also wouldn’t need driver support or application installation and hence lightning fast boot-up. Chrome OS might also change the nature of the software application environment. Right now application developers have to accept Microsoft’s terms to access the information which will let them initiate the hardware calls through the OS. Competition will mean they will have more leverage.
Chrome OS, much like its namesake in the browser arena, will change the game even if it’s a niche product just by adopting newer technologies, thereby forcing others to evolve and provide better solutions.
But can the cloud-driven platform do simple tasks which we take for granted in today’s OS. Can it print? “You will be able to print,” said Chrome’s lead engineer, Idan Avraham, at the launch.

Technology predictions for 2010


With solid product introductions ranging from the iPhone 3GS to Windows 7, 2009 was a good year for technology.

2010 appears poised to build on the strength of trends already in place: greater mobility, a heightened awareness of data security, and web-enabled products and applications that focus on collaboration and interoperability. Here’s a taste of what’s in store.
Smartphones over netbooks
Netbook sales took off over the past few years, and for good reason: these tiny, light computers were tailor-made for the mobile user who increasingly performed most office—related activity online.
Netbooks provide some of the convenience and functionality of a full-fledged notebook while weighing less than half of even the lightest units and boasting battery life that can in some cases take you through an entire day without recharging.
But many netbook users quickly bump up against the limitations built in to this form factor. Screens are cramped, and processors are barely adequate for running Windows. In addition, a notebook computer - even if tiny and lightweight - is still a notebook computer, requiring you to stash it, and the inevitable accessories, in some bag that you have to carry around with you.
As smart phones get smarter and more capable, though, many are finding that they provide a reasonable - and in some cases even preferable - alternative to the netbook. Expect that trend to pick up steam in 2010. Surf the web on a smartphone? No problem. Send and receive e-mail? No problem? Put a smartphone in your pocket? Of course. Smartphones vs. netbook? Unless netbooks start offering much more, expect smartphones to get the nod in 2010.
Apple energises e-books
By now, no one underestimates Apple’s ability to transform markets with innovative products. The iPod, iPhone, and MacBook are all trend-setters that come to represent the cream-of-the-crop in their respective segments and quickly inspire legions of imitators.
Apple’s forthcoming tablet computer, rumoured to be called iTablet, appears destined to follow suit in 2010. Apple is expected to unveil the new device early in the year. Supposedly larger than an iPhone but smaller than a laptop, the thin iTablet can reportedly be used to read e-books, surf the web, play games, and even watch television - all wirelessly.
Apple has been working for some time with selected publishers to port their publications to the new device. When released, the iTablet could shake up not just the computer industry but the publishing industry as well.
Home servers make it home
It’s not often that anyone accuses staid old Microsoft of being ahead of the technology curve, but in the case of its Windows Home Server (WHS) product, released a couple of years ago, that case could easily be made. Windows Home Server is designed to back up your home computers, stream music and video throughout your home, and provide an online gateway to your home computers so that you can access them - and their data - while you’re on the road.
When WHS was first introduced, few saw the imperative of having such a device. Now though, with households regularly having multiple computers and the prospect of data loss being more critical than ever, a home server of some kind has become a necessity for many. In 2010, expect more people to realise that while the majority of their technology gets smaller and more portable, a data storage and backup box of some kind is a vital component of an increasingly digital lifestyle.
You enter the cloud
Cloud computing - which essentially amounts to saving, storing, and retrieving your documents and files online - is still struggling for widespread adoption, despite the emergence of very capable cloud computing applications such as Google Docs http://docs.google.com.
There are also some compelling benefits of cloud computing: backups become a non-issue, and you’ll have access to your files from any computer, so long as it has an Internet connection.
But cloud computing also means trusting a third-party with your data, and it means that you won’t have access to your files if your Internet connection goes down for any reason, so there’s almost built in resistance to the concept.
Still, adoption of cloud computing is likely to get a boost in 2010, due in part to the introduction of Microsoft’s Office 2010, which offers customers the option of using lightweight browser-based versions of its popular office productivity applications.
You won’t even have to purchase Office 2010 to be able to use the cloud counterparts of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, however. Microsoft has said that anyone who signs up for a free Windows Live account will be able to use the online versions of these products. That should increase the comfort level of millions of currently desktop-bound application users and add momentum to what will undoubtedly be a fixture of computing in the future.
Emergence of Web 3.0
Web 2.0 is all about social networking, community building, and the empowerment of the individual information creator. We’ve seen what that can do through sites like MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter.
We’ve also seen the limitations of this model, chiefly in the degree to which such megasites create data silos that require users to hop from one to the other in the course of gathering information.
2010 will see the emergence of Web 3.0, the chief goals of which will be to link these vast resources, open up architectures and create hooks so that web developers - and users - can access data from multiple sources using a single interface.
Google is already venturing into this territory by providing real-time search tools that mine information on social networking sites, and a growing number of Web 2.0 sites today are not only acknowledging the existence of other web-based communities and their data but openly providing users with a way to link resources.
Ultimately Web 3.0 applications will allow us to do away with the mountain of user IDs and passwords that we need for today’s web in favour of helping us mine the information we need with a minimum of surfing. And by almost any standard, that represents progress.

‘Google plans launch of online business software store ’


Internet giant Google Inc is planning to launch a store for selling online business software, a media report says.
Attributing to people briefed by the company, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) stated, “Google Inc is preparing to launch a store selling online business software that integrates with its Web services, enlisting software developers in its battle against Microsoft Corp.”
The people in knowledge of the development said the store would sell business software designed by outside developers to integrate and add capabilities to Google Apps, such as enhanced security features or the ability to import contacts.
Google Apps provides web-based e-mail, word-processing and spreadsheet functions.
“Google could announce the new store - a revamped version of its Solutions Marketplace site that features third-party programmes - as soon as March,” the report said.
Google eventually plans to allow customers to purchase its partners’ software through the site, taking a cut for itself and sharing some revenue with developers, WSJ attributed the report as saying.
Moreover, Google would allow users to quickly access their purchased applications through the menu at the top of their screens within Gmail or Google Docs, it added.
According to Google, more than two million businesses are using the paid or free version of Google Apps.

Google's Plan For Buzz


Google's new social media platform for information sharing, Google Buzz, is clearly a response to the runaway growth of social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. Even more, however, Buzz is about increasing the strength and effectiveness of other Google products, by adding what it gets from observing and organizing this social knowledge.
Buzz, unveiled Tuesday, is a service based in Google's (GOOG - news people ) Gmail that lets you share status updates and links to other media, like videos, news stories and photos, with friends and colleagues. There are settings to share things with the world or with select groups. There is also a mobile version of the service that seeks to tie activities and updates to the phone user's location.
At first pass, that sounds a bit like sharing links and videos on Facebook, or managing lists of people one follows on Twitter. Google, however, has a very different core business from those other companies'  information organization, particularly on the Web. What Google gets from Buzz is a new means of organization, one that should make Google an even more useful part of life--with the not-incidental effect of improving its ability to sell advertising on its search results and mail.
By watching what people upload or who they follow, for example, Google can move towards a more personalized Web search inside the Gmail application. That would make Gmail a more attractive service to have on all the time, for both communication and Web search.
Likewise, status updates on mobile can add to Google's knowledge about who does what when, which can affect the sorts of buildings and businesses it identifies on Google Maps. If Buzz has broad uptake and collects enough opinions, it could serve as a competitor not just to Facebook and Twitter for status updates, but for review sites like Yelp.
Google plans to make Buzz part of its fast-growing offerings to business as well. In this case, a corporate user might choose to follow the updates from a key manager inside the company, or a corporate division in a related field. Top management can float ideas to generate rapid feedback from highly regarded executives and partners worldwide.
Doubtless, much of the tech punditry will agonize over whether Google is doing anything really new here, or just executing its own version of an existing product. Being a creature of Silicon Valley, it's a big deal to Google to be considered a "thought leader" and not a follower.

Top 10 Google Tools for Educators


Just when you think Google can't possibly come up with anything new, they do it again. I've recently run across some new things from Google (at least new to me) and was blown away yet again from the "wow" factor. I am very excited about a Google workshop that we will have at our school this summer with Google Certified Educator Thomas Cooper. Thinking about it all led me to create this list of Top Ten Google Tools for Educators. The hardest part of this was narrowing it down to ten and no, I don't work for Google. :-)

10. Google's Advanced Search feature is a must for any educator working with K-12 students. We try to teach our students to use this feature so that they can stay safe while searching.


9. Google Reader - I don't know how I would keep up with the exploding amounts of information if it weren't for Google Reader. Oftentimes, I am at different computers during the day and Google Reader allows me the flexibility to be on any machine at any given time.


8. Google Sites - There are many uses for google sites including eportfolios and collaborative projects. This part of Google seems to be evolving almost daily. I've seen more and more features and functionality added to this over the past year.


7. Google's Wonder Wheel - This is an incredible way to search for the visual learners in the group. Basically, when you go to google.com, put in a search term. Then click on "show options." Click on Wonder Wheel. You will see nodes that can help you to determine which section of the search you want to explore.











6. Google Presentations - This is a great way for kids to work in groups on projects and not have the stress on parents that carting them everywhere creates. Each child can be in the family room of their own home, on their own computer and working together as a group in the presentations part of Google Docs. You can even start a presentation in power point and upload to Google presentations for refinement. Right now, Google presentations seems to only take .ppt files so be sure you and your students are saving Office 2007 or better files to the 97-2003 format.


5. Google Calendars - Google's calendar allows you to set up different calendars for different things. You can view all of the events from all of your calendars simultaneously and they will be color-coded. (Another plus for those visual learners.) Teachers can manage assignments for different classes and publish the calendar so students and parents can see it. You can even invite people as collaborators on your calendar so that all can input events and tasks as well. This makes a great project calendar. Read this blog entry by a teacher who is using Google Calendar for his lesson planning.


4. Google Maps - When I first heard the term "mashup," I must admit I didn't quite get the concept. Then I ran across this blog post by Jeffrey Branzburg titled Use Google Maps Mashups in K-12 Education. I recommend you read his entire post but the gist of it is that you can add data to Google Maps to make them transform from static to fantastic. There are models for us on this. For instance, the Google Planimeter site allows you to click at least 3 points on the map and it computes the area of the region for you. Interesting!


3. Google Earth - Hall Davidson from the Discovery Educator Network says this about Google Earth, "It has been a long time since a technology application got the eye-popping reaction from teachers that Google Earth gets." Google Earth allows you to plot points on a virtual globe and add information such as links to documents, descriptions, images and even videos. One great application of the use of Google Earth in K-12 education is the Google Lit Trips project. More books are being added to the Google Lit Trips and you can even create your own to submit for consideration. Another example is the US Holocaust Memorial Museum's "Crisis in Darfur." This is a great tool for developing global citizens. **Be aware that Google Earth has some functions that if not used wisely will eat up bandwidth. When using Google Earth with students, it is advisable to set ground rules so you don't crash your school's network.


2. Google Docs and Spreadsheets - Our school has really started to use Google Docs for very creative uses. We use the spreadsheets to manage sign ups for gatherings such as parent information meetings and professional development classes. Additionally, teachers who teach the same prep in high school and junior high have used Google Docs to collaborate on lesson plans. Some teachers are planning to use this to help them manage parent contact information at the beginning of this coming school year. You can upload existing documents and spreadsheets and you can download finished versions of the same. When uploading, be sure to convert the file formats to the Office 97-2003 formats. (.doc and .xls)


1. Google Forms - Ok, I know this is part of the Google Docs app but in my book it deserves a separate mention. Google forms is slowly transforming the way we gather information at our school. Because you can easily create a form and the google docs app automatically creates the spreadsheet it dumps into, it has incredible potential for K-12 education. Imagine starting a new unit with your class and needing to quickly and easily assess where the students are. The teacher can pose some questions on a google form. Now, the teacher can discuss the overall results with the students and begin a discussion on why the survey worked out that way. This can lead to developing anticipatory set for the new concept/topic.
