Improve your Email Privacy

Information regarding email privacy protection and security, emails and email attachment encryption and much more.

The protection of electronic mail from unauthorized access and inspection is known as electronic privacy. In countries with a constitutional guarantee of the secrecy of correspondence, e-mail is equated with letters and thus legally protected from all forms of eavesdropping.

Many websites ask for your email address when you shop online, download a free software etc. But do you know that this has a chance of affecting your email privacy through Spam emails?

Though most websites don’t use spamming as an email marketing strategy, there are a few that use junk emails that don’t care about anti-Spam laws. Here are some tips to maintain your email privacy from such threats.

Before submitting your email address you need to check the reputation of the company. Reputed websites would normally follow the right email practices to ensure your email privacy. Such companies will never want to loose their hard earned reputation by getting blammed for spamming.

See whether the websites provides email privacy statements. You need to go through these statement in detail, and know about the kind of emails that will be sent to you, how often etc. Based on this you can decide on whether you need such emails. You don’t want to give your email address to some fraud company that is thinking about handing over your email address to hundreds of other websites.

Finally, check whether the website really respects your privacy. Often you will find some text like “I agree to receive email” that comes with a check box. You can agree to receive emails by checking the check box. If the check box is already checked, it is just a good indication that the website doesn’t respect your privacy. So watch out!

11-Digit Mobile Numbers

In 2003, the Department of Telecom (DoT) in India had projected the ten-digit mobile numbers would be meet the needs for 30 long years. As of Feb 2009 India registered a user base of 375.74 million wireless subscribers (GSM, CDMA, WLL(F)).

The Department of Telecom (DoT) has amended the National Numbering Plan to introduce 11-digit mobile numbers in the country. The current 10-digit numbers are likely to be inadequate to accommodate the growing new subscriber additions.

In an internal note, dated November 26, 2009, DoT says, "The National Numbering Plan 2003 is amended for migration to 11-digit numbering plan in mobile services by prefixing digit '9' in existing two-digit PLMN Access Code." The mobile number has three components of numbering -- PLMN code, MSC code and subscriber number. The regulator wants another digit to be added to the PLMN code, which, at present, is a two-digit code. MSC code is a three-digit number, while subscriber number is a five digit code.

DoT, which had planned to introduce 11-digit numbers in April this year, wants operators to migrate to the 11-digit ecosystem by January 2010. However, it remains to be seen if operators would be able to migrate to new numbering plan at a short notice.

The telecom operators will only have to make changes in the software for the new numbering scheme. But, the telecom industry needs time to change and understand the implications of the new numbering scheme. “A number of changes may have different levels of impact on the operation. It is difficult to guess unless we start the work. Hopefully, DoT will provide the required time to complete the up-gradation job” , said Pankaj Chaturvedi, associate vice president of Aircel Business Solutions.

India is not the only country where mobile numbers have had to be changed because of the growth story and new operators joining in. China and the UK are among others to have done it. The US is believed to have handled things much better because it follows an integrated numbering plan—for fixed andmobile phones.

The only two other countries to use 11-digit numbers are China (user base of 642.16m as of Jan 2009) and UK (moved to 11-digit due to technical reasons and not due to user base which is lower than India). So the rankings of mobile user base by country looks something like,

  • China – 642.16 million in Jan 2009 (11-digit)
  • India – 375.74 million in Feb 2009
  • USA – 276.1 million in Jan 2009
  • Russia – 181.5 million
  • Brazil – 145 million
  • Indonesia – 117 million
  • Germany – 106 million
  • Japan – 104.83 milion
  • Italy – 92.8 million
  • Pakistan – 90.52 million

New Google Labs Feature : Offline Gmail

Gmail Lab has been continuously releasing new features from last couple of months, most of these feature are aim towards increasing productivity as well as making gmail a best webmail service. Here is another great feature from gmail team, Offline Gmail. Offline Gmail keeps syncing the local cache with server when connected.

You need to install
Google Gears in order to enjoy gmail in offline mode. Once you have enable offline gmail, a local cache of your emails will be stored in your computer using Gears. This local cache will be synchronized with Gmail Server whenever you are connected to network.

You can star/label your emails or send/read or reply emails. All the send emails will be stored in your outbox and will automatically sent as soon as Gmail detects connections.

Another feature of Offline gmail is “
flaky connection mode” which uses the local cache as if you were disconnected, but still synchronizes your mail with the server in the background. Our goal is to provide nearly the same browser-based Gmail experience whether you’re using the data cached on your computer or talking directly to the server.

To try this new features these are the steps:

1. Enable Offline from your Gmail Labs page. (if you dont have it then first install Gears).

2. From your inbox, click the Offline link ("Offline0.1" link in the upper right-hand side corner of your account, next to your username.) .

3. You'll see a prompt from Gears to start downloading your messages onto your computer.

4. Your messages will be downloaded to your computer.

Note:
Offline Gmail works only on:

  1. Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 7.0+
  2. Mozilla Firefox versions 2.0+
  3. Safari 3+
  4. And if you're using Google Chrome, you don't need to download or install Google Gears, as it's already installed on your browser.
Known offline issues:

  1. Sending messages with attachments
  2. Access to the Contact Manager
  3. Complete search results. Try your search again when you’re back online for more results.
  4. Access to conversations in Spam and Trash
  5. Custom synchronization
  6. Some Gmail Labs features
This feature has been used by Gmail internally at Google for quite a while. If you have any questions regarding this new feature feel free to ask me or else you can join the Gmail Group Labs Help offline.

If Gmail lives up to the user expectations, then this would be a big step forward in bringing web mail offline given that presently there are options of offline access to your mailbox, but they all come with strings. You can access your Gmail account through a client like Mozilla Thunderbird. But that doesn't give you all the Gmail functionality like labels.

Yahoo Mail has offered offline access since last summer using Zimbra Desktop. But that also involves using a client on your desktop. For offline access to Windows Live Hotmail, Microsoft suggests using their Mail client software.
