Haiti : Support Disaster Relief

Haiti in Headlines:

On Tuesday 12 January, 9.53pm GMT: Haiti was hit by a massive earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale, causing the collapse of buildings, including a hospital, and causing widespread panic. More than 100,000 are feared dead, and thousands have been left homeless in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince and are now without food, clean water and proper medical care. Sixteen Britons are reported missing in the country, and up to 10 Britons are believed to be among the dead. Already the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti has been hit by a series of disasters recently.



Geology:
The earthquake occurred inland, on 12 January 2010, approximately 25 kilometres (16 mi) WSW from Port-au-Prince at a depth of 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) at 16:53 UTC-5 on the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault system. Strong shaking with intensity VII–IX on the Modified Mercalli scale (MM) was recorded in Port-au-Prince and its suburbs. It was also felt in several surrounding countries and regions, including Cuba (MM III in Guantánamo), Jamaica (MM II in Kingston), Venezuela (MM II in Caracas), Puerto Rico (MM II–III in San Juan), and the bordering country of the Dominican Republic (MM III in Santo Domingo). UNICEF is deploying clean water and sanitation supplies, therapeutic foods, medical supplies and temporary shelter to Jacmel and Port-au-Prince. UNICEF will also be focusing on children who have become separated from their families to protect them from harm or exploitation.

Red Cross Aid Reaches Haitian Earthquake Survivors :

Truckloads of Red Cross supplies arrived in Port-au-Prince on Jan-16th and thousands of responders are traveling the streets providing water and first aid as well as finding lost loved ones and transporting people with serious injuries to nearby health facilities. “America’s support – donations made in the United States to the American Red Cross – is reaching the hands of survivors in Haiti,” said Steve McAndrew, disaster relief specialist with the American Red Cross in Port-au-Prince. Rescue operation continues: 

The Pan American Health Organization now says 50,000 to 100,000 people perished in the quake. Bellerive said 100,000 would "seem to be the minimum." Click here for the complete details.

American Friends Service Committee: Accepting financial aid only at this time. Funds will go to immediate material needs and to help Haitians themselves rebuild their communities.
AME-SADA: AME-SADA is currently assessing the situation in Haiti and will provide humanitarian relief and care on site through their system of local clinics and micro credit operations.
Americares: Specializes in immediate disaster relief
The International Rescue Committee: The International Rescue Committee is deploying its Emergency Response Team to Haiti to deliver urgent assistance to earthquake survivors and help overwhelmed local aid. They’ll be focusing on critical medical, water and sanitation assistance.
Islamic Relief: Islamic Relief USA has launched a $1 million appeal for the victims of the quake, and is coordinating a massive shipment of much-needed aid to the island nation.
Lutheran World Relief: Lutheran World Relief is accepting donations to provide life-saving assistance in response to the earthquake in Haiti. Details of the emergency response will made available as the organization learns more about the immediate needs on the ground.
